Now that Ninja left for greener, Microsoft-funded pastures on Mixer, Twitch needs a new superstar streamer to fill the void. It doesn’t have to be a gamer. Considering how important being online is for everyday life, politicians have been looking at platforms like Twitch as a new fireside chat for connecting with constituents. If you’re cool, you can connect with Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitch.
And if you’re not cool, well, unfortunately Donald Trump has just launched a Twitch channel of his own.
The American president, hopefully on the verge of impeachment, debuted on the service to broadcast his most recent hate rally in Minnesota. Among his usual ramblings, Trump of course took potshots at the media. However, several other outlets have noted the irony of Twitch being owned by Amazon, a company Trump frequently butts heads with due to Jeff Bezos’ control of The Washington Post. We’re also not fans of Bezos by any means, but for different reasons.
Thousands watched live, although many viewers were just there to troll Trump in the comments. The Twitch page now has over 50,000 followers, which is impressive but far short of the 65 million followers Trump has on Twitter. That’s still his social media platform of choice for starting dumb new wars.
One of the most dangerous parts of Trump’s presidency is how he has weaponized disinformation on websites like Facebook and Twitter, Silicon Valley companies run by spineless billionaires who don’t want to take responsibility for how their failure to clean up their own spaces have effectively ruined the world. Right-wing radicalization has already poisoned so much of online gamer culture. Here’s hoping in vain that Trump on Twitch doesn’t speed up the destructive process further.
