Pokemon Sword and Shield are just about a month away. These Nintendo Switch games promise to be the biggest entries yet in the core Pokemon RPG franchise, even if they won’t necessarily have the biggest rosters. And it’s delightful to see how literally Game Freak is interpreting this mantra to “go bigger.” One of the games’ biggest gimmicks is that the Pokemon can literally become bigger. Dynamaxing supersizes all Pokemon into giant-sized versions of themselves. Gigantamaxing offers the same rewards but with even more powerful altered forms to select Pokemon.
And naturally one of those special Gigantamax Pokemon is Pikachu. Check out the deliciously huge Gigantamax Pikachu in this new trailer.
Along with this Pikachu, inspired by its chubbier original design and already dubbed ‘Thicc Pikachu’ by the internet, other fan-favorite monsters got the Gigantamax treatment like Butterfree and Charizard. Eevee becomes even fluffier and irresistible if you transfer save data from last year’s Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee. And Longcat Meowth is the only thing that can even hope to rival Thicc Pikachu in terms of sheer meme power.
It may be too early to say this, but I appreciate how Sword and Shield seem to be going for quality rather than quantity when it comes to new Pokemon. Granted, a 24-hour livestream just for Galarian Ponyta may have been a bit much. But that cake Pokemon and that smug duck with a sword and that floating smog ball with a top hat have brought me more joy than any other Pokemon have in a decade.
