Instagram’s new restrict tool empowers users to “quietly” protect their account from online harassment.
“Bullying is a complex issue, and we know that young people face a disproportionate amount of online bullying but are reluctant to report or block peers,” the social network wrote in a blog post.
Now you can restrict them instead: Simply swipe left on a comment, visit the Privacy tab in Settings, or take action directly on their profile.
Once “restricted,” pests’ comments on your posts will be visible to them and only them; that person will never know that no one else can read their backtalk.
To make a heckler’s remark public, simply approve it.

Restricted users are not able to see when you’re active on Instagram, or when you’ve read their direct messages—which automatically move to Message Request.
Choose to “unrestrict” an account and all future messages will flow right back into your inbox.
“It’s our responsibility to create a safe environment on Instagram,” CEO Adam Mosseri wrote in a July blog post. “This has been an important priority for us for some time, and we are continuing to invest in better understanding and tackling this problem.”
Only 10 days into the job last year, Mosseri introduced a new algorithm, trained to detect harassment in photos and captions and proactively send offending content to the Community Operations team for review.

Use creativity to spread positivity (via Instagram)
Security isn’t Instagram’s only focus: The platform is also “putting our community’s creativity at the center of our work” with a new Create Don’t Hate sticker in Stories.
“We wanted to create a flexible tool that allows young people to speak up, define what’s acceptable in their community, and spread positivity on Instagram,” the blog said.
“We are committed to leading the industry in the fight against online bullying and will continue to build on that commitment long term,” Instagram added.
