Lyft Pilot Helps Users Contact ADT In Case of Emergency

Lyft teams up with safety and security expert ADT (via Lyft)

Lyft and ADT have teamed up to develop new ridesharing security features.

The partnership kicks off in earnest early next year with a pilot program that lets users signal to ADT via the Lyft app if they need assistance.

In case of an emergency (or perhaps an uneasy feeling about the trip), riders and drivers can discreetly connect via voice or text with a security professional at one of ADT’s monitoring centers.

After contacting the consumer—or if there is no response—ADT will alert local authorities, who can follow up as necessary.

“Safety is fundamental to everything we do at Lyft,” the company wrote in a blog announcement. “We are always looking for ways to continue our commitment to safety, and that includes working with expert partners.”

This “unprecedented” alliance, according to Lyft, builds upon the firm’s existing features like in-app access to 911 and the recently unveiled Smart Trip Check-In.

Lyft will pilot the ADT mobile safety solution in nine U.S. markets, including Chicago, Los Angeles, and New Jersey.

There is no word on an official launch date. And it remains unclear whether users must have an existing ADT contract to tap into the function.

ADT did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“We continue to leverage our deep expertise, technology, and the trusted ADT brand to expand our reach into new areas of security beyond the home and business,” Jim DeVries, president and CEO of ADT, said in a statement.

“Partnering with Lyft broadens our exposure while enabling ADT to further realize our mission and believe that people deserve to be safer and more secure wherever they are,” he added.
