Bow down to No. 435, also known as “Holly,” the winner of Katmai National Park and Preserve’s “Fat Bear Week” annual competition.
The Katmai National Park and Preserve, which is located in southwestern Alaska, announced the winners of its Fat Bear Week, on Tuesday, NPR reported. The fun contest aims to celebrate the process of bears eating and making sure their fat reserves are ready for winter hibernation.
To publicize the competition, park rangers created a March Madness-inspired bracket that listed all the heavyweight contenders, each with pictures that showed their girth and size. The public was invited to vote on the biggest bear in each pair of the bracket. Holly was placed against No. 775, also known as “Lefty,” and the results were shocking.
Once 12 hours of voting concluded, Holly generated roughly 17,000 votes, while Lefty only racked up about 3,000. Holly looked beautiful in her photos, showing off her robust frame that was a result of her salmon-rich diet.
“It was very hard to get a good picture [of Holly] out of the water, because she was a submarine for the entire month,” Katmai Conservancy media ranger Naomi Boak explained to NPR. “She did not stop fishing, except to dig a belly hole big enough for her to sleep in.”
Holly and her other furry friends are preparing for the winter season ahead and until then, fans can admire the queen of fat bears.
