NASA recently introduced new Artemis Generation spacesuits and they are designed to keep astronauts comfortable and safe on the moon’s surface.

Artemis aims to land the first woman and next man on the moon by 2024. There have been many discussions lately about spacecraft engineering, space conditions, and what astronauts will be wearing on their missions. NASA recently held a meeting at its headquarters in Washington, D.C., where attendees received a sneak peek at two spacesuit prototypes: The xEMU suit and the Orion suit.

At the meeting, NASA spacesuit engineer Kristine Davis and Orion Crew Survival Systems project manager Dustin Gohmert modeled the prototype spacesuits that were introduced by NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine and NASA spacesuit engineer Amy Ross.

The xEMU suit advances spacesuits previously worn on the moon during the Apollo missions and those that are currently used for spacewalks outside the International Space Station. This spacesuit, which is designed for exploring the lunar surface, features extra comfort and mobility. Interchangeable parts also come with the spacesuit for working in space or on the moon.

Designed for a custom fit, the Orion suit incorporates mobility features and safety technology to protect astronauts on launch day, during the return to Earth, on high-risk parts of missions near the moon, and in other emergency situations.

Both spacesuit prototypes could be headed to the Red Planet as well: NASA will adjust each spacesuit for future Mars missions, so astronauts can stay comfortable and safe during their time in space.
