Pizza Hut is challenging everything you thought you knew about cheesy pies.
Starting Wednesday, the restaurant chain will test a plant-based topping—served in a round box.
Mind. Blown.
The pilot, available exclusively at one Phoenix Pizza Hut location, will introduce the new Garden Specialty Pizza, topped with Incogmeato Italian sausage by MorningStar Farms.
“We innovate for human’s sake and we’ll win on taste—PERIOD,” Marianne Radley, chief brand officer at Pizza Hut, said in a statement. (The company’s emphasis, not mine.)

Hot off the heels of last month’s Stuffed Cheez-It Pizza launch, the new Garden Specialty Pizza features Incogmeato Italian sausage, onions, mushrooms, and banana peppers.
The new-to-the-world brand was developed by MorningStar Farms (a division of the Kellogg Company that produces vegetarian food) to “satisfy what flexitarians are seeking today,” Wendy Davidson, president of Kellogg Away From Home, said.
Pizza Hut, meanwhile, partnered with California tech firm Zume—working toward a more sustainable future of food—to design a better receptacle for storing and transporting products.
A round box for a round pizza. Sounds obvious, doesn it?
But the Italian staple has always come in a square package, careening into cardboard walls and spreading grease and garnishes wherever it goes.
Not anymore.
Not only does a round box contain less overall packaging, but it’s also industrially compostable (where available), and interlocks easily to ensure intact delivery.
“This revolutionary round box—the result of a two-year journey—is the most innovative packaging we’ve rolled out to date,” according to Nicolas Burquier, chief customer and operations officer at Pizza Hut. “The round box was engineered to make our products taste even better—by delivering hotter, crispier pizzas.”
“We’re thrilled to support Pizza Hut’s packaging efforts to provide its fans with a great pizza-eating experience,” Zume CEO Alex Garden added.
Phoenix customers can visit the Pizza Hut at 3602 E. Thomas Road on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 11 a.m. to try the limited-run Garden Specialty Pizza, served in a new round box.
The product combo costs $10, and is available in-store only—while supplies last. All proceeds will be donated to local sustainability organization Arizona Forward.
Following the Phoenix trial, Pizza Hut will look at ways to roll out its round box more widely.
“We don’t do anything halfway, and improving the customer experience and delivering a better tasting pizza is our core mission,” Radley said. “When we talk about feeding more possibilities we mean it—and I can’t wait to share these two new industry-changing innovations with our customers.”
