Tesla Teases Customizable Horn, Movement Sounds

Tesla drivers will soon be able to fart and bleat at passing cars and pedestrians.

Company CEO Elon Musk on Sunday teased an upcoming option to customize horn and low-speed movement sounds.

“Coconuts being one, of course,” he tweeted, alluding to the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, in which King Arthur’s assistant uses two halves of the tropical fruit to simulate hoofbeats of a nonexistent horse.

Musk used the blowing wind and goat emojis, meanwhile, to signify flatulence and baaing. Because one of the world’s most preeminent entrepreneurs is a seven-year-old child.

The full list of alternative noises is not yet available.

The company “will consider” allowing vehicle owners to upload their own sound clips—a lawsuit waiting to happen.

As Engadget pointed out, Tesla may be bound by regional requirements for specific movement sounds to alert pedestrians.

Early last year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced requirements for “quiet cars” to emit a specific warning sound when moving at speeds below 20 mph.

But the agency is considering relaxing the rules to allow a suite of alerts from which drivers may select their preference.

Surreal British humor is not limited to Tesla’s audio system, though.

The manufacturer’s V10 software update—which introduces “Tesla Theater” for video playback on the large center display—apparently comes with a themed Easter egg, first spotted by Model 3 owner Iwan Eberhart.

When the Swiss motorist, who named his car “The Rabbit of Caerbannog” after one of Holy Grail‘s greatest gags, selects “Monty Python” in the Tesla Theater, he is redirected to a YouTube channel dedicated to the 50-year-old comedy troupe, of which Musk is an avid fan.

After digging through the source code of the latest Tesla Android app update, 9to5Google uncovered a “coconut sound” MP3 file.
