A dive team recently explored a shipwreck off the coast of South Carolina and found a trove of rare coins that could be worth millions of dollars.
Blue Water Ventures International and Endurance Exploration Group announced the shocking discovery in a press release and said a recovery vessel and dive team arrived at the shipwreck site late last month.
Divers salvaged through the shipwreck of the SS North Carolina, a steamship that sank after it collided with its sister ship, the Governor Dudley, off the South Carolina coast on July 25, 1840, Fox News noted. Brass spikes used in the ship’s construction, dinnerware, marble, and gold coins were the first shipwreck items found by divers at the site.
SS North Carolina’s sinking accident did not result in any injuries or deaths: All crew and passengers were transferred to the Governor Dudley minutes after the collision, however, passengers’ baggage items and the ship’s cargo were lost in the sinking, according to both companies.
It’s estimated that the hard currency lost during the collision incident may be worth millions of dollars today. Experts believe that some gold coins from the U.S. mint in Dahlonega, Georgia, in 1838 would have been in circulation before the SS North Carolina sank in 1840, and if found, would be valuable in the present collectors’ market.
According to both companies, the Blue Water magnetometer survey team will relocate to the SS Pulaski site and remap the vicinity. After trips to the SS Pulaski site, divers found that last year’s hurricane season shifted sand and the debris field. The BWVI team says a survey of the area needs to be conducted in order to efficiently excavate the site.
