Wildlife officials found a dead turtle along a shoreline in Florida and sadly, the tiny animal died from consuming too much plastic.
Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, which is located in Boca Raton, Florida, announced the turtle’s death on social media, Fox News reported. In a Facebook post, the deceased reptile is shown next to 104 pieces of plastic that were stuck in its stomach.
“This turtle, which would fit in the palm of your hand, had eaten 104 pieces of plastic,” Gumbo Limbo Nature Center wrote on Facebook. “This is a sad reminder that we all need to do our part to keep our oceans plastic free.”
Gumbo Limbo Nature Center said it’s washback season and during this time, small turtles wash up along the Florida coastline. Even though wildlife officials try to rescue these baby turtles, not all of them survive. According to the nature center, all of the washbacks that died had plastic in their intestinal tracts.
According to SEE Turtles, hundreds of thousands of turtles and other marine animals die each year from ingestion or entanglement in marine debris. Eighty percent of trash found in seas comes from landfills and other urban sources that reach the seas through rivers.
