Uber Lays Off Another 350 Workers In Final Round of Cuts

Uber has laid off some 350 employees across several teams, including Uber Eats.

CEO Dara Khosrowshahi announced the cutbacks in a company-wide email.

“Days like today are tough for us all, and the [executive leadership team] and I will do everything we can to make certain that we won’t need or have another day like this ahead of us,” Khosrowshahi wrote, as reported by CNBC.

This marks the “last wave” of a process Uber began in August with the reduction of 400 marketing jobs, followed by recent cuts of 435 staff from its engineering and product teams.

Now, its online food and ordering delivery platform, as well as performance marketing, recruitment, advanced technologies group, and safety units are being culled.

The layoffs, TechCrunch confirmed, amount to roughly 1 percent of Uber’s workforce, which spanned nearly 26,800 workers as of the end of June.

“As part of this exercise, some of our employees are being asked to relocate, and around 350 people will be leaving the company,” according to Khosrowshahi.

More than 70 percent of those affected are based in North America; the rest are relatively evenly distributed across the remaining continents.

It remains unclear how, if at all, Uber’s self-driving car unit was affected: The branch, which spun out on its own earlier this year, previously counted more than 1,200 team members. Despite layoffs, it told TechCrunch it still retains more than 1,200 workers.

“We have proven ourselves to be not only one of the most ambitious and innovative companies in the world, but also one of the most resilient,” Khosrowshahi wrote.

“We’ve always pushed through tough times and come out the other side a better and stronger company,” he continued. “That will continue to be true tomorrow, and every day after.”
