Uber is reportedly testing a new feature that lets passengers warn drivers that a four-legged friend is coming along for the ride.
The new Uber Pet pilot program launches next week in select cities across the US.
Riders will, of course, have to pay for the privilege of carting their companions around town via a “small surcharge,” according to TechCrunch.
And while Uber promised to pay “a significant portion” of that tax—between $3 and $5—to drivers (on top of their standard earnings), chauffeurs can choose to steer clear of trips with non-service animals by simply opting out of Uber Pet in the app preferences menu.
“This new feature lets you communicate to a driver that you’ll be bringing a furried (or even scaled) friend onboard your Uber trip,” the company said, as reported by CNET. “We built this feature to give riders peace of mind.”
The new travel tier does not replace the company’s existing service animal policy, which permits non-human helpers to accompany riders “at all times” (for free).
Rather, Uber Pet was designed for those folks who need to schlepp their dog to the vet or transport their cat to Bring Your Pet to Work Day.
Passengers in Austin, Denver, Nashville, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Tampa Bay can tap into the new function starting Wednesday, Oct. 16.
Uber did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
