I hesitated to even write this. My girlfriend’s family lives in the Bronx so I spent a fair amount of time there. And the last thing I want to do is blow up their spot with folks unironically obsessed with a clown who loves crime. But it’s too late. The Joker stairs are ruining the Bronx.
Since Joker is on track to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, that means lots of people have seen it. That also means they’ve seen the scene where Joaquin Phoenix, in full glorious clown makeup, dances down the steps set to a song by an artist we won’t mention.
Joker isn’t shy about the fact that its grimy dirty 1980s Gotham is just a barely redressed modern New York. So folks in the city quickly figured out that these iconic stairs are quite easily accessible at Shakespeare and Anderson Avenues along West 167 Street. Really, it was only a matter of time before Joker fans (and Instagram influencers with nothing better to do) flocked to the staircase to prove they are part of society.
But why should I clown on this when the great Desus and Mero can clown on it so much better.
So if you want to come to the Bronx and absolutely must dance on these steps, please just try not to bother anyone who actually lives there. That’s not comedy, it’s a tragedy. For more on Joker here’s how the movie proves that not all comic book stories need heroes, and here are some other movies to watch if you’re a fan of the film.
