Blade Ice Skates Uphill in ‘Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3’

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is a fun but kind of dumb video game. But it’s the kind of dumb fun video game that only gets dumber and therefore more fun the more stuff you jam into it. Fortunately, the DLC season pass stuffs even more characters and modes into the Nintendo Switch superhero action RPG. And the first of three planned episodes just dropped.

Just in time for spooky October, “Curse of the Vampire” is based on the mature Marvel Knights imprint. Those hoping for any kind of significant story material though will leave disappointed. Instead, you get the new Gauntlet mode that challenges your team to complete a set of challenges in a row or go for high scores in endless mode. It just has a thin premise about enemies being infected by vampires, an excuse for foes to resurrect stronger in the middle of fights. Infected enemies also appear in a new harder story difficulty.

But who cares about the plot. The DLC makes the game’s already impressive roster of Marvel heroes even more satisfying. In a game full of people using magic and superpowers, The Punisher just shoots a bunch of guns and looks like an anime Italian gangster. Moon Knight is here in his slick all-white outfit to explain who he is before his upcoming Disney+ show. And this is Morbius The Living Vampire’s last chance to suck blood and look cool before Jared Leto ruins him.

The real star of the show though is my boy Blade. Elsa Bloodstone is great but two monster hunters in the game is even better, especially when one of them is the coolest and most underappreciated Marvel character in both comics and early film. This Not Wesley Snipes growls lines about aiming for the head and battling Dracula while he launches glaives and stakes into opponents. In previous Ultimate Alliance games Blade was a cornerstone of my team of all Black heroes. And it’s so exciting to bring him back into the fold.

Beyond the characters and modes there’s a new store and new in-game currency. You can buy voice clips as well as extra costumes (which the game desperately needs more of). Whenever we see how Mahershala Ali looks like as the MCU Blade perhaps that outfit will make it in. You can also buy consumables to speed up character leveling, and you’ll want that since the new characters are annoyingly low level when you unlock them. Blade’s power is just too much to fully unleash at once.

The season pass for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is available now for $20. You can’t buy any of it individually but the pass will give you access to X-Men and Fantastic Four content in the coming months. In the meantime, here’s our review of the Nintendo Switch Lite, a great system for playing this game. And here are some other cool Nintendo Switch games to play right now.
