‘Fallout 76’ Gets a Paid Subscription for Some Reason

This week saw the release of Obsidian’s new sci-fi RPG The Outer Worlds. Reviewers praised it for, among other things, continuing the spiritual legacy of Fallout that those developers originated and continued with the underappreciated Fallout: New Vegas. It’s funny then that the current, actual Fallout game is back in the news. Bethesda now wants you to buy a subscription for Fallout 76 for some reason.

Fallout 1st is a subscription pass that assumes the best way to fix Fallout 76’s issues as an online multiplayer game is to give it an MMO business model, just without the free-to-play beginning. However, instead of turning the game into something massively multiplayer, the biggest selling point is Private Worlds for you and seven friends to create and inhabit, a personal nuclear hellscape server free from other West Virginia riffraff.

For $13 per month or $100 per year members can also enjoy unlimited scrapbox storage, a more convenient survival tent, exclusive outfits and emotes, and a monthly allowance of atom currency.

However, we’re still very skeptical. That’s a lot of money to consistently spend one just one game, even if it’s great. Compare that to Xbox Game Pass or Apple Arcade. Or imagine all the streaming services you could get with that. And Fallout 76 is, uh, not great. Bethesda has promised various improvements, from extended battle royale modes to new NPC quests. But even they all but admit that the game’s launch last year was pretty disastrous. Even the bags were broken. Maybe Bethesda can turn it around, but I’m not subscribing based on just faith.
