There’s a New ‘Ghost in the Shell’ Series Coming

Update: Netflix just released the first trailer for its new Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 series coming next year.

Suffice it to say, reactions to the new CGI art style have been… divisive.

The live-action Ghost in the Shell is in the theater right now, but if you’re not into live-action versions of anime, you’ll be pleased to know there’s a new anime series on the horizon.

Just in time for a whole new crop of fans to fall in love with the franchise, the anime will come from Kenji Kamiyama, the director responsible for Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, arguably one of the best Ghost in the Shell works out there.

He’ll be working with the legendary Shinji Aramaki as part of a “double director team.” Aramaki directed Appleseed and Appleseed Alpha, if you’re unfamiliar, both series that come before Ghost in the Shell and deal with similar themes.

The anime won’t simply be a sequel to the previous anime, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Society, however. It’s supposed to be the “birth of a new Ghost in the Shell world,” which sounds pretty ambitious, and very exciting for fans of the series. There aren’t any further details about what this means, exactly, such as a series name or further details, but the fact that it exists is still something to get excited over.

If you’re still looking for more Ghost in the Shell to get excited about, you should go back and check out the original film that started it all. You can never go wrong starting at the beginning and working your way up through all the media again. You’ll definitely be satisfied.

But don’t be mistaken: There will never be a better Ghost in the Shell anime opening than the late Origa’s “Inner Universe,” which is an excellent song in its own right, even beyond the anime. In fact, the entire Stand Alone Complex is worth your time. Grab a copy. It’s for your own good.
