Fortnite, the biggest game in the world, is dead. Right now, hundreds of millions of dabbing children are unable to participate in the massively popular free-to-play battle royale game to see who’s the last one standing. Instead, they’re just staring at a black hole. Presumably, that black hole will soon give way to our first glimpse at Fortnite’s future. But I doubt that future will be cooler than the hole itself.

Fortnite keeps itself fresh (and its developers crunching) by regularly mixing up content in the form of seasons. That’s when you buy new battle passes and check out new changes to the map. This black hole event marked the end of season 10. And as Fortnite moves into double digits, it appears the changes will be more substantial than just some new themes for Tilted Towers.
Various rumors and leaks have pointed to the existence of something called Fortnite Chapter 2. While details are scarce, everyone assumes this will be a brand new map, which is a pretty huge change. Folks have spent countless hours learning Fortnite’s sole battlefield. If it blows up into space dust to be replaced by something new, it could really even the playing field.
But as cool as that would be, this limbo we’re currently trapped is even cooler, even if it is ultimately just marketing. The Fortnite Twitter has been completely nuked saved for the livestream. Desperate players deprived over their cocaine-like drug have been coming up with countless conspiracy theories about when the game will return. Crack the code, man! Going dark like this is a really fantastic antagonistic use of the online games as a service model that I otherwise hate. We haven’t felt this connected since trying to get to the bottom of Peter Molyneux’s cube.
I’m sure we’ll be able to play whatever the new Fortnite is any day now. There’s too much money on the line. So just let me savor this one chance to enjoy that the game is nothing but an empty dark void right now. That’s what happens when you let Batman in your game.
