‘Funkoverse’ Is the ‘Disney Infinity’ of Tabletop Games at NYCC

As a home for anything and everything even remotely nerdy and #branded, you better believe Funko Pops had a big presence at New York Comic Con. Official retailers and shady flippers alike had booths crammed with the dead-eyed dolls ready to sell to attendees, even rare figurines exclusive to the convention.

But Funko Pops are more than just toys now. They’re appearing in weird spin-off Gears of War mobile games and even threatening to star in their own cursed feature film. Knowing that, a Funko Pop tabletop game sounds pretty expected. Fortunately, after learning more about Funkoverse at NYCC, we’re willing to give it a little more credit.

Funko Pops, above everything else, are about giving customers and quick and cute way to collect little reminders of their favorite pop culture properties. Funkoverse brings this spirit into the tabletop realm by almost being the Disney Infinity of board games. There are common sets of rules. Each board has the same scenarios for different game modes like battling or capturing the flag. But bringing in various new universes changes up the experience substantially.

For starters, while the scenario might be the same, different boards from different worlds feature different layouts to learn. This may favor characters who originate from that universe, like Joker knowing the twisted streets of Gotham City. And speaking of characters, while the creators at Funko Games tried to balance the cast, Funkoverse is a bit like a fighting game in terms of the variety of the roster.

DC Superheroes are great brawlers while Harry Potter and his magic friends cast spells from afar. Meanwhile, Blanche from the Golden Girls is a real flirt and can draw other characters to her. Along with their unique abilities you can customize characters with real, physical items like Harley Quinn’s mallet. Don’t forget, your game pieces are mini Funko Pop toys in their own right.

This starting lineup of Funkoverse sets is pretty modest. Beyond the universes we already mentioned you can also get a Rick and Morty set. But if they keep going, forget Disney Infinity, Funkoverse could be a buckwild crossover the likes of which the world hasn’t seen since Mugen.
