Geek Pick: Xbox Elite Series 2 Controller Lives Mas

I believe pretty firmly that overall we care about video game controllers just a little too much. As game controllers reached the consensus that is the current dual-analog stick design, we just started splitting hairs about exact placement and weight and trigger depth. And whenever someone does try to radically rethink the controller, gamers view it as a temporary deviation from the norm rather than a potential future of fun. For my money, the coolest controller Microsoft makes is the Xbox Adaptive Controller and its bevy of accessibility options.

However, I also firmly believe that people should be able to have the gaming experiences they want. And if hardcore gamers want a premium controller fine-tuned to their specific borderline professional needs, they should have that choice. The Xbox Elite Series 2 controller is that choice.

But first, a few words on Taco Bell. The Xbox Elite Series 2 controller officially launches on November 4 for $180. However, you can enter for a chance to win it early through a promotion with Taco Bell. The controller you’ll get (just like the controller we got) doesn’t feature any Taco Bell branding, just durable enough components to withstand Dorito shell dust. However, you’ll also get a full-fledged Xbox One X Eclipse console that makes the Taco Bell noise when you turn it out. Maravilloso. You’ll also get a few free months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

Even if you don’t win the contest though you should still consider this controller. We’ve had the original Elite Controller in the office for a while as our primary way to play Xbox games. And after first picking up Series 2 it didn’t feel that different. This isn’t a bad thing. The textured grips, hefty yet balanced weight, hair trigger locks, and swappable stick tension and D-pad pieces were already great. Now they’re just more refined.

The more substantial changes, too, are more about improving what’s already here rather than fixing something totally broken. The controller now sports a 40-hour battery you can recharge over USB-C. You can create different controller profiles and quickly swap between them uses buttons on the controller itself. And the whole thing just feels more sturdy, so chunks won’t pop off quite as easily.

We already put Microsoft’s big shooter for the year, Gears 5, through its paces. But for games like that and more, the Xbox Elite Series 2 controller is a great choice. Now go find the nearest Taco Bell… and hope the meat is okay.
