These days Riot Games may be more infamous for sexual harassment scandals and catering to Chinese censorship even more than Blizzard, but the developer is in fact still best known for League of Legends, the widly popular MOBA with a name more comprehensible than Dota. League’s massive success, celebrating its tenth anniversary this month, is even more impressive when you consider it’s only been available for free on PC. But now that’s about to change.
Check out the announcement for League of Legends: Wild Rift, the upcoming mobile and console version.
Riot insists that Wild Rift isn’t just a port. It’s a new game built specifically for these platforms, with faster matches and a new map, hence the new name. Considering the complex hot-key dependent control scheme of MOBAs, they do need some tweaking to work on controllers and touch screens. In fact, one reason why many suspected League wouldn’t come to mobile was because it would compete with existing mobile MOBA Arena of Valor (also on Nintendo Switch) from Riot’s parent company Tencent.
You can play Wild Rift, on mobile at least, starting in 2020. Pre-registeration is available now for Android. If a worse version of Call of Duty can make bank on mobile, we can’t imagine how much mobile League can clean up.
And if you, like me, just aren’t excited by MOBAs, the League of Legends universe may still have some something new to offer you. We also got our first brief snippet of gameplay from “Project L,” the long-rumored League of Legends fighting game built on the accessible mechanics of the Rising Thunder prototype Riot acquired. They’re apparently making a League clone of Overwatch, too.

So yeah, Riot has some intriguing projects in the works. Maybe now they can stop farting on their employees.
