‘Mario Kart Tour’ Finally Gets Luigi

Luigi is finally playable in Mario Kart Tour. That’s it. That’s the news story. So why am I writing a post instead of just hitting retweet? Because it’s fascinating, wild, and kind of damning that the other brother in Super Mario Bros. finally being playable in a Mario Kart game is even a story at all.

After a few delays, Mario Kart Tour launched a few weeks ago, bringing one of Nintendo’s most popular franchises to its biggest potential userbase on mobile. I didn’t like it. And a big reason why I didn’t like it (beyond awkward touch controls) was because I felt that Nintendo had just fully embraced the scummiest tactics of free-to-play mobile game monetization. It especially stung launching so close to the revival of premium mobile games on Apple Arcade.

Luigi only now being added to the game honestly feels like a parody of the desperate mobile game methods Nintendo once swore they would never stoop to. Of all the characters you think you could just expect to be in a Mario Kart game on day one, Luigi has got to be at the top of that list. But nope. You had to wait. And not only that, you may have to pay for the chance to unlock him, pay more money than it costs to get the full-fledged Mario Kart experience on the go with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Nintendo Switch.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 launches very soon. And to celebrate the Luigi’s Mansion course has also been added to Mario Kart Tour’s track selection alongside the green coward. Rosalina and King Boo also got spooky new outfits. But holding back Luigi just so his arrival can be a better commercial for another product isn’t exactly the most satisfying explanation. I’m not even a Luigi stan. I just don’t like Nintendo resorting to the same content drip-feed games as a service techniques that have frankly ruined so many modern video games across a variety of platforms.
