There comes a time in one’s life when one is faced with a question, an eternal query that for decades has stained the minds of some of the great thinkers of the 21st century. It’s a question that does not discriminate – paupers and presidents alike have encountered it and found they must answer, for that is the law of the land.
It would seem that the question has, at long last, knocked on the door of sneaker juggernaut Nike’s Beaverton, Oregon campus and once again demanded an answer: Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?
SpongeBob SquarePants. It’s SpongeBob SquarePants. But now? Now it’s also your feet.
Earlier this summer, Nike released one of the most hyped sneaker collaborations of the year with the hit Nickelodeon cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants. Produced in collaboration with NBA All-Star and new Brooklyn Nets starter Kyrie Irving, the line consisted of five shoes in colorways inspired by SpongeBob, Patrick Star, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, and Sandy. The first three were featured on a Kyrie 5 silhouette while the latter two adorned the new Kyrie Low 2.

The collection proved a smash hit, selling out almost instantly and soon being spotted on the feet of everyone from sneaker newcomers to WNBA superstars. It only makes sense that Nike would bring them back for a restock this week on the SNKRS app.
What wasn’t a guarantee was the likelihood of the collaboration continuing, but fear not – that’s now confirmed. There will be at least one further addition to the line and it might be the crown jewel of the whole thing. That’s right – the Kyrie 5 Pineapple is coming your way.

Irving himself unboxed the shoe on a recent Bleacher Report video and it’s a doozy, easily the dopest Kyrie 5 of the entire SpongeBob line. The upper features a beautifully colored pineapple print with a leafy green foldover tab and blue accents (“under the sea” you know?). It’s also got that signature SpongeBbob wheel on the heel and, probably the best detail, a drawing of Gary the Snail under the tongue. It’s an absolutely stunning piece that looks just as rad on-foot as it does on its own as a work of art.
The Kyrie 5 is likely on its way out soon as the rumored Kyrie 6 is likely to debut before the end of the year. This might not be the very last Kyrie 5 colorway that goes up for sale, but it’s likely one of the last few, and it’s a great note to end on.

From the Friends colorway to one inspired by Irving’s obsession with conspiracy theories, the Kyrie 5 has been a great reminder that sneakers are at their best when they’re fun, eccentric, and accessible. The SpongeBob pack has been so incredibly indicative of that, opening up the world of sneaker collecting to a fanbase who had likely never considered diving into it before. It’s only fitting that it end on a note this strong.
Irving will be debuting the shoe on the NBA’s opening day on Tuesday, October 22. The shoe, which retails for $130, will go live on the Nike SNKRS app on Oct. 24.
