As the streaming wars heat up, and every media company tries to snatch up any scrap of content that might encourage just one more potential subscriber to sign up, it’s getting tough to tell what exactly is on what service. Disney+ literally just tweeted out all of its shows and movies it expects to offer on day one. Apple it out here paying hundreds of millions of dollars for its star-studded prestige dramas. And Seinfeld is coming to Netflix.
But even in this crowded field, the latest streaming acquisition stands out. The Studio Ghibli library is coming exclusively to HBO Max.
Considering how so many American anime fans had to settle for finding weird bootleg dub tapes of their favorite series growing up, the ease of streaming has led to a global anime explosion exciting both veterans and newcomers. Not only are there dedicated anime streaming services like Crunchyroll but Netflix turns new releases, like Neon Genesis Evangelion, into events in their own right. They even produce their own anime, like the recent Cannon Busters.
Studio Ghibli is on an entirely different level though. Even the most ardent anime hater recognizes Hayao Miyazaki (himself an ardent anime hater) as an artistic genius. Animated films like Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and The Wind Rises are straight-up masterpieces regardless of genre or form. Considering how precious the studio is, how often they teeter on the edge of shutting down, we figured they would never give up gems like this to something as banal as a streaming TV service. Previously, it was physical media or bust. Plus, considering the studio’s relationship with Disney and Harvey Weinstein, distribution was bound to be tricky.
But they worked it all out. Here are all the Studio Ghibli movies you can expect to stream on HBO Max in 2020.
