Sorry Haters, Zoe Kravitz Makes Catwoman Black Again in ‘The Batman’

Zoe Kravitz is playing Catwoman, and not just in The Lego Batman Movie. The acclaimed actress (and daughter of musician Lenny Kravitz) is sinking her claws into the role of Selina Kyle in Matt Reeves upcoming live-action reboot The Batman, according to Variety. Based on her performance in Big Little Lies, we have no doubt she can match Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne as far as haunted intensity goes. So yeah, sorry haters, but Catwoman is Black again.

After the casting was announced, folks dug up an old story in which Kravitz said she was denied a role in a previous Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises, because she was “too urban.” Whether or not the role was Catwoman, ultimately played by Anne Hathaway, the implication was that she was too Black for this Gotham City.

That’s no longer the case. Alongside Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright is adding some color to the role of Commissioner Gordon just like he did with Felix Leiter in the new James Bond movies. A Black Jim Gordon also means a Black Batgirl. And if this still takes place in the same DCEU, that means they may all get to hang out with Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black… Black Canary in Birds of Prey. Some conspiracy theories even connect this casting back to the allegedly separate continuity of Joker, but that would be a spoiler.

But really the history of Black Catwoman is almost as old and rich as the character herself. Eartha Kitt’s turn as the feline femme fatale is one of the most iconic parts of the 1960s Batman TV show. The 2004 Catwoman movie has a bunch of problems, but Halle Berry’s race isn’t one of them. And along with Kravitz, plenty of Black actresses have lent their purring voices to the character including Cree Summer and Sanaa Lathan in the upcoming animated Harley Quinn show.

Catwoman is supposedly just one of multiple legendary Batman villains slated to appear when The Batman arrives in theaters June 25, 2021. It is too much to hope for a Black Poison Ivy? Someone get Viola Davis’s Amanda Waller on the phone.
