After a period of intense negotiations, Spider-Man moved back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) last week. Tom Holland, the star who plays the web-slinging hero, may have helped Marvel and Sony reach a new deal.

Sources say Holland made many appeals to both Disney CEO Bog Iger and Sony film chairman Tom Rothman to reconsider their partnership, The Hollywood Reporter noted. Even though the chance of Spider-Man returning to the MCU was “100 percent dead” last month, Holland reportedly urged both parties to reconsider their negotiations.

On September 27, Holland’s wishes came true: Marvel announced that it would produce a third Spider-Man film for Sony and for the superhero to appear in at least one additional Disney-Marvel movie.

“I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it. Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe,” Marvel chief Kevin Feige said last week. “He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”

Details haven’t been revealed on the new Spider-Man film yet, however, it’s expected to hit theaters on July 16, 2021. Fans now have a new movie to look forward to, thanks to Holland’s push for both Marvel and Sony to come up with a new Spider-Man deal.
