If you were a nerdy kid in the late 1990s you had an embarrassment of riches to choose from when it came to “loveable anime monsters you collect and power up into cooler forms.” It was hard to resist the sheer gravitational pull of Pokemon, anchored by a truly fantastic game but also surrounded by other media like cards and the anime. However, rival franchise Digimon offered its own appeal, from its very early 2000s take on cyberspace to a plot with stakes and characters way more compelling than Pokemon’s glorified sports drama.
Pokemon has decidedly won that battle. Remember Monster Rancher? However, if you’re still holding a torch for that other monster menagerie, check out this Digimon mod for Pokemon Sword and Shield.
For the most part the Pokemon Sword and Shield mod has been an extension of the Dexit tantrum, adding back old Pokemon that were initially cut from the game. It’s nifty to see this in action, but I was hoping we’d get Pokemon mods that didn’t quite feel like such a petulant tantrum.
This wacky Digimon mod though is totally up my alley. At Game Banana you can check out a series of Digimon skins created by Hollow. It’s pretty modest. Charmander becomes Agumon and Charmander’s evolutions become Agumon’s digivolutions Greymon and MetalGreymon. It’s a cool crossover (even if technically Digimon don’t stay in their evolved forms permanently the way Pokemon do). If you’re going to bend the rules with Nintendo Switch modding, you might as well go for broke like this.
