‘Lego Builder’s Journey’ Is a Blocky Apple Arcade Tearjerker

There have been a ton of Lego video games all capturing different aspects of the ubiquitous building block toys. Lego versions of Star Wars and Harry Potter and Jurassic World show how we love using Lego to build our own adventures in these famous franchises. Meanwhile, something like Lego Worlds is all about using your imagination to build something totally from scratch.

However, none of these games have really depicted the emotions underpinning our love of Lego. These blocks have been around so long there’s multi-generational nostalgia for them, adults passing them onto their children. This epiphany is what eventually gave The Lego Movie its added resonance beyond the great gags.

And now Lego Builder’s Journey is aiming for resonance from the start. Check out this first trailer for the new Apple Arcade game.

When I first tried out Apple Arcade I noticed how its focus on premium, almost bespoke games hearkened back to an earlier era in mobile gaming. A standout from that era is Monument Valley. And with Lego Builder’s Journey it really does look like Lego wanted to make its own take on that game in particular.

This “artistic, nonverbal puzzle adventure” comes from Light Brick, a new internal Lego games studio tasked with creating narrative games like this. What a fascinating idea. In the game players remake the gorgeous little Lego worlds around them, and chill out to relaxing music, to meditate on the nature of creativity itself, “highlighting the importance of play in our lives.” Keep in mind that Lego promotes “serious play” at like corporate team-building events, so they’ve always been down for this kind of hippy magical thinking.

Lego Builder’s Journey is available now on Apple Arcade. For more on Apple Arcade check out our thoughts on the crossover arcade sports game Ultimate Rivals as well as our takes on twenty other games available from the subscription service.
