Well, I sure am glad I didn’t rush to the cinema to see Cats*.
On Friday (the film’s opening day), Universal reportedly advised thousands of theaters that they will receive an updated copy of the movie with “some improved visual effects.”
The move—disclosed in a memo obtained by The Hollywood Reporter—is unprecedented for a finished title already in release, according to industry insiders, who told the entertainment magazine that this is being done at director Tom Hooper’s request.
Despite an all-star cast (Taylor Swift, Dame Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Idris Elba, Rebel Wilson, Jennifer Hudson, James Corden) and crew (Hooper directed Oscar winners The King’s Speech, Les Misérables, and The Danish Girl), Cats has been troubled from the start.
Early trailers—featuring famous faces covered in digital fur—divided the Internet: Turns out not everyone is into mouse-sized felines singing, dancing, and carrying on conversations.
Standing by his possibly career-shattering decision to make Cats, Hooper admitted to barely completing its CGI effects before last week’s world premiere.
Now he wants to make some tweaks.
The film—which opened Friday to a measly $2.6 million and a Rotten Tomatoes score of 18 percent—could use all the help it can get.
An updated version is now available for exhibitors to download via a satellite server; those without access will receive a hard drive by Tuesday, The Hollywood Reporter said.
Universal is asking that theaters replace the current print “as soon as possible.”
The studio did not immediately respond to Geek’s request for comment.
