Most people know Martin Luther King Jr.’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech only from history books and soundbites.
That will soon change.
Starting in late February, visitors to the DuSable Museum of African American History in Chicago can recreate the public sermon in all its inspirational glory via Time magazine’s immersive project “The March.”
The exhibition, scheduled to open on Feb. 28, brings the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom and Dr. King’s stirring speech to virtual reality for the first time.
“The first exhibit of The March at the DuSable Museum will allow visitors of all ages to powerfully witness and participate in history first-hand, like never before,” Time Editorial Director of Immersive Experiences Mia Tramz said in a statement.
Drawing on personal experiences of organizers and demonstrators, the VR project uses photogrammetry, motion capture, and 3D animation to transport participants through time and space to become part of the March on Washington.
“The March provides an educational and historically accurate experience through the use of the most ambitious and complex VR techniques to date,” Tramz explained, “while also introducing the next generation of creators to immersive technology.”
It brings “the action of this historic event to audiences in an unprecedented way” through technology, innovation, and Time‘s “commitment to accuracy,” the magazine’s editor-in-chief and CEO Edward Felsenthal said.
Devised by experience design studio Local Projects, The March is co-created by immersive storyteller Alton Glass and Tramz—also an executive producer, alongside actors Viola Davis and Julius Tennon of JuVee Productions.
“To be able to experience Dr. King’s 1963 March on Washington in this state-of-the-art virtual reality exhibit is an amazing opportunity,” according to Perri L. Irmer, president and CEO of the DuSable Museum. “Especially for our young people to connect with the civil rights movements and inspire our ongoing pursuit of social and racial justice that is still a hard-fought battle—even today.”
