As people get ready for Christmas, Banksy is urging everyone to think about Bethlehem’s present-day dilemma.
The street artist recently unveiled a “modified nativity” scene at the Walled Off Hotel in Bethlehem, according to an Instagram post.
Dubbed Scar of Bethlehem, the piece shows Joseph and Mary kneeling next to baby Jesus in front of a giant concrete wall, CNN noted. There’s a guiding star mark right in the middle of the structure and it’s graffitied with “love” and other words in different languages.
“It is a nativity, Banksy has his own contribution to Christmas,” Wissam Salsaa, the hotel’s manager, told AFP. “It is a great way to bring up the story of Bethlehem, the Christmas story, in a different way — to make people think more of how Palestinians live in Bethlehem.”
The hotel, which was opened by Banksy in 2017, features the street artist’s work and raises awareness about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Rooms in the hotel face a 30-foot high wall part of the West Bank barrier, BBC reported. Israel says it’s necessary to prevent attacks, while Palestinians say the wall separates them from Jerusalem. In 2004, the International Court of Justice said the controversial barrier is illegal.
“Banksy is trying to be a voice for those that cannot speak,” Salsaa added. “He is creating a new model of resistance through art.”
