‘My Hero Academia’ Creator’s Amazing Star Wars Art

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker officially hit theaters today, but while it’s taking up most of the blockbuster space in the United States, it’s sharing the day with an unlikely contender in Japan.

Namely, My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising.

My Hero Academia is a popular shonen anime, meaning it’s marketed towards young boys and focuses on coming-of-age and overcoming all odds with friendship and hot-blooded pluck. For the past 3 days, manga creator Kohei Horikoshi has been posting art of My Hero Academia’s characters counting down until the franchise’s new movie releases, all dressed in formal duds for the affair. Here, we’ve got fan-favorites like Tokoyami and Tsuyu, as well as lesser known bit players like Yuga Aoyama and Koji Koda, all front and center and ready to celebrate. The only big players who seem to be missing, actually, are main character Deku and rival Bakugo, who I can only imagine will show up on Horikoshi’s release day art.

While it’s fun for Star Wars fans to imagine the countdown also celebrates their own favorite series, Horikoshi has actually officially celebrated a Star Wars release before. Collaborating with the space fantasy series back in 2017, the artist drew a Star Wars: The Last Jedi poster in his art-style. Here, we see Rey, Kylo Ren, and Captain Phasma in full glory, as other supporting characters pose dynamically in the margins. True to Horikoshi’s style, the logo takes up a box in the bottom-right corner, giving the poster the feeling of an American comic book.

Which maybe makes the two juggernauts going head-to-head somewhat of a heartfelt moment. I wonder who has the high ground?

Heading back to our side of the pond, John Boyega recently appeared on First We Feast’s Hot Ones series, where during the interview, he acknowledged the connection between Star Wars and anime. “The X-Wings, the spaceships, the lightsaber fights, all that kinda stuff is anime-esque.”

When asked for anime recommendations, Boyega didn’t mention My Hero Academia, though he did mention Naruto and One Punch Man, both of which are frequently compared to My Hero Academia due to its goofy superheroes and heartfelt coming-of-age story.

My Hero Academia is currently airing its fourth season, which deals heavily with similar themes of succession to the new Star Wars trilogy, as the main characters deal with the retirement of previous #1 superhero All-Might. Catch its simulcast every Saturday over on Crunchyroll, one of our favorite streaming TV services.
