Classic ‘Doctor Who’ Arrives in the UK Via BritBox

The largest streaming collection of classic Doctor Who is finally available in the UK.

Subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service BritBox, a collaboration between the BBC and ITV, launched ad-free access to the vintage era (1963-1989).

At least, what’s left of it.

BritBox offers 600 episodes—558 spanning the first eight Doctors, plus four stories featuring a combination of OG content and new animation, the unaired “Shada” (originally presented as six episodes, but uploaded as a 130-minute special), two solely animated stories (“The Power of the Daleks” and “The Macra Terror”), and five orphaned episodes.

Doctor Who: The Movie, An Unearthly Child: The Pilot Episode, and An Adventure in Space and Time are also available, in addition to “The Underwater Menace,” “The Wheel in Space,” and “The Web of Fear,” which have been completed via Telesnaps.

Spin-off drama K-9 and Company, and documentaries More Than 30 Years In the TARDIS and Doctor Who: Doctors Revisited round out the collection.

For £5.99 a month, fans can relive these time-honored adventures, organized chronologically by Doctor.

BritBox will also curate special collections: “New to Who” introduces the uninitiated to one key episode from each of the first seven Time Lords. Regeneration episodes have been collated; future compilations will be devoted to memorable monsters.

Grab the popcorn, dim the lights, and take your place hiding behind the sofa: If viewed back-to-back—without stopping for food, bathroom breaks, or sleep—it would take the ultimate Whovian about 272 hours (more than 11 days) to watch every piece of TARDIS-tastic content on BritBox.

“[This] creates a special opportunity for fans and streamers across the UK,” Reemah Sakaan, group director of ITV SVOD, said in a statement. “We are looking forward to expanding the collection even further by working with the show creators to lovingly restore lost and previously unavailable episodes in the months to come and offering a truly exclusive experience.”

The streaming service debuted to U.S. audiences in 2017 to celebrate “the very best” of British television, promising “the most comprehensive” collection of UK-based content—mostly a bunch of shows you’ve frankly never heard of (The Moonstone, anyone?).

Aside from Doctor Who, a few classics like Pride and Prejudice (the Colin Firth-in-a-wet-shirt one!), Inspector Morse, and Fawlty Towers are also on hand.

Only five more sleeps until the Doctor Who season 12 premiere.

Refresh your memory of the gang’s latest exploits in our recaps of season 11 finale “The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos” and 2019 New Year’s special “Resolution.”
