Google Chrome Provides Real-Time Phishing Alerts

Better password protections in Chrome (via Google)

Google Chrome now warns users when a password has been stolen.

Type your credentials into a website and the browser automatically alerts you if your username and passcode have been compromised in a data breach.

The tech titan introduced this technology in February with the launch of a Password Checkup extension, which later became part of the Google Account, where users can scan saved passwords anytime.

“And now it has evolved to offer warnings as you browse the web in Chrome,” senior product manager AbdelKarim Mardini wrote in a blog announcement.

Control the feature via Chrome Settings > Sync and Google Services.

“For now, we’re gradually rolling this out for everyone signed into Chrome as part of our Safe Browsing protections,” Mardini said.

If you’ve ever used the Internet, you’ve probably fallen victim to malware, a data breach, or phishing. We’ve all been there: I recently had to change my online grocery password after unwittingly following instructions in a spoofed email.

But despite defenses (like Google’s Safe Browsing list), some phishing sites can slip through the cracks. So Chrome now offers real-time protections on desktop, warning users when visiting malicious sites in 30 percent more cases.

This protection, according to Mardini, has been in place since 2017. An update, however, means the feature works for all passwords stored in Chrome’s password manager—even if Sync is not enabled.

“Hundreds of millions more users will now benefit from the new warnings,” Mardini boasted.

Including those who share a computer or use multiple profiles. To ensure you’re creating and saving passwords for the right account, the desktop browser now includes a visual representation—i.e. a profile picture—in the upper right corner.
