‘Super Mario Maker 2’ Gets Free ‘Zelda’ DLC’

Super Mario Maker 2 is already one of our favorite games of the year. It took the sublime Mario level editor of the Wii U game and put it on the Nintendo Switch, a console with an actual community. It’s great for trolling your co-worker or your significant other. And it just gives you so many Mario toys to play with.

However, in the months since the game’s launch, fans have patiently waited for even more Mario content to remix. The original game got a steady drip of new pieces, but so far Super Mario Maker 2 has only gotten mild adjustments like improved multiplayer options and expanded level upload limits.

Fortunately, Nintendo hasn’t forgotten about Super Mario Maker 2. Far from it. In just a few days, the game is getting a substantial free new version 2.0 update. And although there’s no new art style, it still looks legendary.

At this point Nintendo is exhausting all possible ways to make a “Legend of Zelda Maker” without making a game called “Legend of Zelda Maker.” The Link’s Awakening remake let you rearrange dungeon maps. And now Super Mario Maker 2 lets Mario pick up the dang Master Sword.

But unlike the amiibo costumes in the original Mario Maker, Mario’s Link costume here gives him access to Link’s arsenal including sword swings, down thrusts, arrows, and bombs. The new melee and projectile abilities, combined with Mario Maker’s proven ability to make puzzle-filled mazes, will open up all sorts of straight-up action-adventure games. And since this is limited to the original Super Mario Bros. style, we get a lot of Zelda 2 vibes.

That’s not all though. On December 5, there will be a few new pieces like Spike enemies, dash blocks, and P-coins. And a new speedrun comparison mode looks a whole lot like the Mario Royale fan game Nintendo shut down a few months ago. But really this Zelda stuff is where it’s at. Wendy’s must be thrilled.
