Uber Has Segregated Bathrooms for Drivers

When it comes to “Which tech company is the worst?” really they’re all winners, and we’re all losers. But Uber has got to be high up there in terms of sheer evil. I’ll admit adding more tech to the concept of taxis is super convenient. Unfortunately, Uber has used its success to become the most awful parody of Silicon Valley exploitation, treating regulation laws with contempt and creating a permanent underclass of contractors trapped in the gig economy.

In case you needed a blunt visual metaphor for how Uber treats its drivers like second-class citizens we’ve got you. As reported by Vice, this Uber office has bathrooms segregating drivers from “employees.”

The photo comes from an Uber Greenlight Uber office in Providence, Rhode Island. In theory these offices are for new drivers to get signed up and find real life support that’s rare from a job spent constantly on the road. But for Erika Betts, the driver who took this picture, the office was a stark reminder of what the company really thinks of the laborers who actually create the value.

Instead of separating bathrooms by gender (something that’s increasingly and thankfully falling out of favor) the bathrooms are split between “Employees,” people who work for Uber, and “Partners,” drivers who Uber will never correctly classify as employees.

What could possibly be the point of this? Does Uber think drivers are dirty? Do they never want employees to have to wait in line for the bathroom? Apparently, Uber didn’t have an answer for this either because once the issue was raised the company called this a “mistake” and removed the signs.
