Custom Face Mask Unlocks Phone, Blocks Coronavirus

This story feels like some hack writer tried to cram as many topical examples of our growing dystopia into one sentence. A designer in San Francisco (check) is designing custom Face ID-compatible masks (check) so you can still unlock your phone in the middle of a coronavirus outbreak (check check check). What a cool world!

But whether we like it or not, this is actually happening. As reported by CNET, the Resting Risk Face comes from designer Danielle Baskin. Whereas folks who care about privacy tend to use face masks to elude facial recognition systems, these masks do the exact opposite. Their custom appearances mirror the bottom half of your face just enough to trick your phone.

Beyond that utility, the masks are also meant to serve a larger, more practical social purpose. If viruses like COVID-19 continue to spread, and populations continue to wear face masks to protect themselves, eventually it gets that much more difficult to visually separate people from each other when most of their faces are obscured by identical material. Resting Risk Face may look like a creepy slice of skin, but at least it looks like a creepy slice of your skin. Before even ordering your mask you upload a photo of your own face for specific reference.

Resting Risk Face is still in the works. Along with testing how well they actually function, Baskin also wants shortage of medically sound N95 masks to end before profiting herself. That hasn’t stopped over 1,000 people from signing up to buy these for $40 each. In the meantime, this phone made of skin has a lot of the same cursed energy.
