Online dating can be a real gamble: Will they actually look like their profile picture? Do they secretly harbor neo-Nazi tendencies? Will they try to kidnap and murder me before the night is over?
Worry not, Match.com users: The courtship company has introduced a new in-app safety feature that keeps family and friends informed during your tete-a-tete.
Date Check-In automatically texts messages to trusted contacts when you schedule a date.
“Gone are the days of having to text all your best friends individually every time you plan a new date (we’ve all done it!),” according to a Match.com blog announcement.
Simply select the Date Check-In icon (upper right corner of each Match conversation), then opt-in to add names and phone numbers for up to three people.
Once they agree to participate, they’ll receive automatic updates including the day, time, location, and name of the person with whom you’re meeting.
Your companion is also informed once you’ve scheduled a Date Check-In—hopefully to discourage any unsafe or inappropriate behavior.
“With Date Check-in, you simply give us the details and we handle the outreach, giving you more time to prep and pamper for the big day,” Match.com said.
As an added precaution, the app texts users at the beginning of each date to “see how things are going.” If all is well, no response is needed.
But, if at any point you feel uncomfortable, reply “YES” and Match will notify your trusted contacts immediately.
“Date Check-In is the first of many features we’ll be rolling out as part of our evolving Safety Center,” the company said, urging users to “stay tuned.”
