Someone Finally Made a Smartphone That Won’t Let You Take Naked Selfies

A spate of high-profile hacks in recent years have taught us that smartphones might not be the smartest places to store your sensitive selfies. One Japanese phonemaker saw that as a business opportunity.

Tone Mobile, a low-cost service provider, has unveiled the Tone e20. It sells for a bit under $200 at today’s exchange rate but its price is hardly its most interesting feature. The e20 won’t let you take naked selfies.

That’s thanks to a feature called “smartphone protection,” which as SoraNews 24 reports, doesn’t have anything to do with protecting the e20. It’s all about the e20 protecting whoever is using it.

Fire up the camera and the e20 will analyze the subject matter to make sure there’s nothing inappropriate in the shot. Try to take the picture and you’ll be presented with a screen like this:

Smartphone Protection isn’t something that Tone Mobile cooked up to keep folks from leaving their nudes floating around somewhere that hackers might be able to access them — though that might be a decent reason to buy the phone if you have issues with self-control and can’t resist the urge to snap steamy photos.

The feature is actually aimed at younger users, and it’s not hard to see how it would appeal to parents who are shopping around for a phone to hand over to their kids.

The e20 actually takes things a step further. It doesn’t just prevent pictures from being taken. It also rats out the user when they try to take them.

When an attempted violation occurs, Smartphone Protection sends a notification to a parent’s paired device. It reveals the time and location and even a heavily-pixelated thumbnail of the offending image — which, Tone Mobile assures, does not get stored anywhere after the alert is sent.
