The port of the original Doom for Nintendo Switch recently got patched to remove annoying audio bugs and the bizarre online connection requirement. While the patch was nice, it was strange that the game even needed one in the first place. One of the greatest parts of Doom folklore is how enterprising modders have gotten the seminal first-person shooter to run on just about anything even remotely like a PC, from calculators to MacBook Touch Bars.
Case point, here’s Doom running on a McDonalds cash register.
Ladies and Gentlemen
I give you DOOM

Originally reported by Kotaku, this mod reveals that the computers McDonald’s employees use to add your extra fries are also more than capable of hurtling players through Mars and the depths of Hell. I’m loving it!
The genius behind this is teenager Ryan Edgar. No, he didn’t covertly get the game running on a cash register out in the wilds at an actual McDonald’s, despite how great that would be. Instead, he took home an abandoned register from a McDonald’s that was upgrading. The old register ran on Windows XP, and despite encountering the point-of-sale terminal’s encryption in the Task Manager Edgar simply ran Doom off of a USB stick and played with a keyboard and mouse through a USB splitter.
As far as Doom mods go, this might be the most delicious yet. For more on Doom check out the latest on Doom Eternal from this past E3 and nab yourself some free new Doom levels from John Romero himself. Next time let’s make a Doom mod where you play as Mac Tonight.
