These Are the Games You Should Play in October 2019

October heralds the beginning of what I affectionately call “Gameageddon.” There is no shortage of big, must-own titles dropping this month. Whether you’re playing on PC, Switch, PS4, Xbox One, or even Google Stadia, you’re going to have something to play.

October’s most notable titles include a new(?) Call of Duty, the latest Destiny 2 expansion, and another spooky Luigi’s Mansion. There are also a number of notable indie games like Indivisible, Concrete Genie, and Trine 4. Overall, this is a very solid month for gaming. My heart goes out to each and every one of your wallets.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
Release date: October 25

Another year, another Call of Duty. Well, sort of. 2019’s Modern Warfare serves as a reboot for the franchise. It contains many of the characters from the original but in all-new settings and situations. This entry promises to have a grittier tone than previous entries while still retaining the over-the-top “Michael Bay” inspired action scenes. Modern Warfare will also have the series’ celebrated multiplayer modes. Expect this to be the year’s biggest seller (because Call of Duty).

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Breakpoint

Platforms: Google Stadia, PC, PS4, Xbox One
Release date: October 04

The other big military shooter of the month is Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Breakpoint. Like Ghost Recon: Wildlands, this entry takes place in a massive open-world environment. Survival and tactics play a large part in the experience. Players must use nature to conceal themselves or utilize technology to get the drop on foes. With the inclusion of Jon Bernthal as the game’s lead antagonist, Breakpoint will surely bring a new audience to the franchise.

Destiny 2: Shadowkeep

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
Release date: October 01

Destiny 2 is still very much alive, even if it doesn’t dominate headlines like its predecessor. Shadowkeep is the game’s latest expansion. It contains an all-new raid and improvements to the gameplay. What makes this DLC truly notable is that it is Destiny’s first big release on Steam since Bungie went independent. Shadowkeep could be a sign of where the company plans to take the franchise now that it is free of Activision.

Luigi’s Mansion 3

Platforms: Nintendo Switch
Release date: October 31

You have to give Nintendo props for dropping Luigi’s Mansion 3 on Halloween. Like previous entries, the goal in Luigi’s Mansion 3 is to capture ghosts. The main difference is that, instead of a mansion, you’re stuck in a creepy hotel. Gameplay-wise, this sequel introduces Gooigi, which is a Slimer-like companion who helps Luigi solve puzzles. There are also a number of competitive and co-op modes for those who want to play together. Expect this to be Nintendo’s biggest game of the month.

You can pre-order Luigi’s Mansion 3 from Amazon.

The Outer Worlds

Platforms: PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One
Release date: October 25

The Outer Worlds is essentially Fallout in space. This isn’t a big surprise given how developer Obsidian previously worked on Fallout: New Vegas. Players will get to explore a variety of planets run by greedy corporations. They’ll fight aliens and monsters all while gaining experience and loot to help them survive against overwhelming odds. If you felt disappointed by Fallout 76, this should give you what that title couldn’t.

You can pre-order The Outer Worlds from Amazon.

Concrete Genie

Platforms: PlayStation 4
Release date: October 08

PS4’s biggest exclusive of the month is actually a small indie game. Concrete Genie centers on a young artist named Ash who uses his talents to bring color and life to his grey world. This one seems like a spiritual successor of Jet Grind Radio with the way you can paint backgrounds. At around six hours, this seems like the perfect game to spend an afternoon playing. Considering how most games are now 60+ hour experiences, Concrete Genie will be a breath of fresh air.

You can pre-order Concrete Genie from Amazon.

Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince

Platforms: PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One
Release date: October 8

Trine 4 takes the series back to its 2D roots. Like the first two entries, this is an action-platformer with a heavy emphasis on puzzles. Each of the four characters has different abilities. It’ll be up to you to decide how to use their unique talents to progress. One thing I loved from the demo is how you can solve puzzles in many different ways. Trine 4 is also the most visually impressive entry in the series, which says a lot considering how awesome past installments looked. This is one I’m personally looking forward to.

You can pre-order Trine 4 from Amazon.

Indivisible

Platforms: Linux, MacOS, PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One
Release date: October 08

Another game I’m stoked for is Indivisible. This fully hand-drawn game combines aspects of RPGs, fighting games, and Metroidvanias. Though turn-based in nature, battles get quite intense, especially when you have a full roster of four characters unleashing super moves. For me, the big highlight is the beautiful animation. You can tell the devs poured every ounce of blood and sweat into making Indivisible look its very best.

You can pre-order Indivisible from Amazon.

The Legend Of Heroes: Trails Of Cold Steel III

Platforms: PlayStation 4
Release date: October 22

Don’t let the generic title fool you, The Legend of Heroes series is one of the best JRPG franchises you’ve never heard of. Unlike Final Fantasy or similar games, it tells one continuous story from entry to entry. While the main draw is its turn-based battle system, fans have stuck with the franchise because of its deep story and rich characters. This third entry should help give the franchise a much-needed boost in popularity.

You can pre-order The Legend Of Heroes: Trails Of Cold Steel III from Amazon.

MediEvil

Platforms: PlayStation 4
Release date: October 25

This is an interesting game to me purely because I don’t ever recall anyone clamoring for a MediEvil remake. Actually, remake is an unfair label to give this title as it is more of a reimagining. I never got on board the MediEvil hype train back in the day so I’m somewhat confused as to why this updated version exists. With that said, it’s good that legit fans of the series will get to return to this strange world. Who knows, perhaps it’ll do as well as the Crash Bandicoot reboot.

You can pre-order MediEvil from Amazon.
