The Surface Pro 7 Finally Has A USB-C Port

Microsoft revealed its latest-generation Surface devices at an event this morning. While there was plenty of updated tech on display a simple port may have stolen the show.

Rejoice, Surface Pro fans: Microsoft has finally decided to give you a USB Type-C port. Its diminutive counterpart, the Surface Go, shipped with USB-C last year which was a pretty good indicator that the change was coming.

As is sometimes the case in situations like these, the arrival of one port also marks the departure of another. There’s no mini DisplayPort on the Surface Pro 7.

At worst, that means picking up a new cable or adapter. And it’s not as though Microsoft ditched every other port on the new Surface Pro for a single, lonely USB-C.

The right side of the tablet still features a USB A port and a Surface Connect port — which, presumably, means that the Surface Pro 7 will still work with your existing charger or dock. We’re waiting from Microsoft to confirm.

And in the top corner on the left side? Yep, there’s still a headphone jack.

Microsoft has upgraded the internals of the Surface Pro 7, too. While the newly announced Surface Pro X got a lot of attention for its powerful but lightweight ARM processors, the Surface Pro 7 features full-fledged 10th-gen Intel Core processors. That combined with tweaks to the 12.3-inch, 2,736 x 1,824 PixelSense display make this the most powerful and most efficient Surface Pro ever.

Storage options start at 128GB and climb to a max of 1TB and models are available with 4/8/16GB of RAM. Prices start at $749 on the low end and the Surface Pen and Type Cover are still optional accessories. Pre-orders start today and devices will start shipping on October 22.

All in all, the Surface Pro 7 is a modest upgrade from its predecessor. That said, the Surface Pro 6 was already a very good piece of hardware. The combination of a current-gen processor, slightly improved display, and the added versatility of USB-C really does make the SP7 quite a bit better.

Maybe just not so much that you’d want to swap a Surface Pro 6 for one.
