Larry Page and Sergey Brin have grown Google from a PhD research project to a multinational technology company.

Now, 21 years later, the pair are resigning their fatherly duties.

In a Tuesday blog post, Brin and Page announced that Google CEO Sundar Pichai will take over as chief executive of parent company Alphabet Inc.

“He will be the executive responsible and accountable for leading Google and managing Alphabet’s investment in our portfolio of Other Bets,” Page and Brin wrote.

“Sundar brings humility and a deep passion for technology to our users, partners, and our employees every day,” they continued. “He shares our confidence in the value of the Alphabet structure, and the ability it provides us to tackle big challenges through technology.

“There is no one that we have relied on more since Alphabet was founded,” the blog said. “And no better person to lead Google and Alphabet into the future.”

The pair will “remain actively involved” in the corporation, continuing to serve as board members, shareholders, and co-founders.

Pichai joined Google in 2004 to lead produce management and innovation efforts for a suite of software products, including Chrome, Chrome OS, and Drive. He went on to oversee the development of other applications like Gmail and Maps, as well as the Android operating system.

In October 2015, Pichai stepped into his role as CEO of Google; two years later, he joined the Board of Directors of Alphabet.

“I want to be clear that this transition won’t affect the Alphabet structure or the work we do day to day,” he wrote in a Dec. 3 email to Googlers about the management change.

“I will continue to be very focused on Google and the deep work we’re doing to push the boundaries of computing and build a more helpful Google for everyone,” Pichai said. “At the same time, I’m excited about Alphabet and its long-term focus on tackling big challenges through technology.”

But what about big challenges from outside the company?

Currently the target of antitrust probes by federal and state governments, Google is also embroiled in a legal battle with employees over unfair labor practices.
