Marvel Previews New Kylo Ren Origin Comic

With Kylo Ren’s story set to wrap up in The Rise of Skywalker, fans are torn over where his character arc will end. The #Reylo crowd, for instance, wants redemption for the troubled “Sith,” and romance with main character Rey. Meanwhile, other fans and even Adam Driver himself question “What does he have to be redeemed for?” With the debate still raging on, Marvel is hoping to add fuel to the fire by previewing its new origin comic, The Rise of Kylo Ren, which is set to release next Wednesday.

Written by Charles Soule, who penned The Death of Wolverine X-Men series and the Darth Vader prequel comic Dark Lord of the Sith, the series follows the events between Ben Solo destroying Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Temple in a flashback during The Last Jedi and his appearance on Jakku in the opening scene of The Force Awakens. According to StarWars.com, the comic will also delve into Luke’s response to Ben’s turn, and how it leads to his self-imposed exile prior to Rey’s visit in The Last Jedi, ultimately building up to what Soule says will be a “mythological moment” similar to Anakin’s battle with Obi-Wan in Revenge of the Sith.

“It was about creating a story that felt epic and above all emotional for Ben Solo,” Soule explained. “Because this transition, this turn to the dark side has to be as good and stand at the same level as some of the other big turns to the dark side we see.”

Earlier, StarWars.com gave us a glimpse into the comic itself, with a 7-page preview that shows three of Ben’s classmates returning from a mission to find Luke’s Jedi temple in flames and Ben standing alone among the wreckage. They debate back and forth over what happened, Ben’s supposed role in the disaster, and what to do with him. Two of the students eventually decide to duel Solo, with Ben simply responding that “None of you are Jedi.”

In just these seven pages, Ben and his classmates go through grief, anger, accusation, and betrayal, each having a different response. As for Ben himself, he still seems to be in shock, split between two paths. As Soule explained about Ben’s character, “In one of the very early moments…we kind [of] see the two sides of Ben where you can see him emotionally hurt and then he starts to put up this shield, this outer shield. Within the course of two panels, you want to show in one instance this is a frightened boy and in the second instance he has the potential to be this really, really dark person.”

Aside from Ben and Luke, the comic is also set to provide more context for the mysterious Knights of Ren, who recently made their first direct appearance outside of an off-hand mention or force-powered vision in a trailer for The Rise of Skywalker. According to Soule, comic readers will “learn an awful lot about the Knights of Ren very, very fast,” providing much-needed context for the lore behind the group just before The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters. Soule also reveals some of the Knights’ personality quirks, saying he was inspired by motorcycle gangs, classic Westerns, and Samurai tales in depicting their interactions with Ben.

“They’re not as powerful as a Jedi or a Sith, but they use it [the Force] when they fight…they have some sort of a code, like a motorcycle gang, but it’s not elaborate. They’re flexible.” He explains further about their selfish nature. “Mostly they’re just kind of out to live their lives the way they want to live them and take what the galaxy will give them and eat what the dark side sends.”
