In theory, The Game Awards are about celebrating the best video games of the year, video games that have already come out and that you can play right now. It’s why Geoff Keighley’s award show might give the top prize to Geoff Keighley’s Death Stranding. But as we all surely know by now the event is really about showcasing glossy ads for upcoming video games you can only pre-order.
A cool thing about games though is that even if a game isn’t finished, there are still ways to play it. And for this year’s Game Awards the show is letting the viewers at home get a taste of upcoming releases with some exciting limited-time free demos in The Game Festival.
“Let’s face it: Not everyone can attend a physical trade show or consumer event,” Keighley said in a statement. “The Game Festival is designed from the ground-up as an event without barriers, extending the benefits of a physical event to the global gaming community that watches The Game Awards.”
The Game Awards start this Thursday night, and earlier that day (1 P.M. Eastern time) Steam users can enjoy a bunch of free Game Festival PC demos for 48 hours. Here’s the whole list!
- System Shock (Nightdive Studios)
- Eastward (Pixpil / Chucklefish)
- Spiritfarer (Thunder Lotus)
- Moving Out (SMG Studio / Devm Games / Team 17)
- Röki (Polygon Treehouse / United Label)
- Chicory (Greg Lobanov)
- Wooden Nickel (Brain&Brain)
- Haven (The Game Bakers)
- Heavenly Bodies (2pt Interactive)
- Acid Knife (Powerhoof)
- The Drifter (Powerhoof)
- Carrion (Phobia / Devolver)
- SkateBird (Glass Bottom Games)
Skatebird! So when The Game Awards start, while you spend some time watching what games bring home the trophies (and spend more time watching commercials), why not spend the rest of your time playing some free new and upcoming video games.
