Colin Trevorrow Confirms Leaked Script, Plus Concept Art

Earlier this month, a script hit the internet that allegedly detailed ousted Star Wars: Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow’s plans for his not-to-be Star Wars sequel. Originally leaking through a YouTube channel, and later a Reddit post, the script included such fantastical details as a droid doppelganger of Darth Maul and a climactic duel on Mortis, a fan-favorite planet from the Clone Wars cartoon. For fans disappointed by The Rise of Skywalker, it seemed to offer almost everything they wanted, but never got. For this reason, it was easy to consider it a hoax…until reputable outlets like AVClub and Slashfilm started verifying it as the real deal.

Now, Trevorrow himself is coming out to say definitively that, yes, the leak is true. The script for Star Wars: Duel of the Fates, complete with all its bombastic fan service and arguably better writing, is actually what we would have gotten had he not been replaced on the project by J.J. Abrams partway through production. It’s a bittersweet confirmation, because even though it does lend the story a touch more legitimacy, it’s still not what we got, which makes all its intriguing details all the more tantalizing.

Thankfully, along with confirming the leaked script’s veracity, Trevorrow also confirmed a recent concept art leak for it, which visually depicts many of Duel of the Fates’ more enticing concepts and moments beat-by-beat. It’s not quite a movie, but it’s kind of a comic book?

Either way, it’s the best we’re going to get, at least for now. The complete concept art leak has been posted to imgur, but let’s go through some of the biggest highlights.

First, we have Rey, who in Trevorrow’s script, is not a Palpatine. You may remember that she and Kylo broke Luke/Anakin’s lightsaber in a force struggle towards the end of The Last Jedi. While Rise of Skywalker chooses to have her repair the weapon off-screen between films, Duel of the Fates instead has her combine its remnants with her staff from Force Awakens to make a new double-bladed lightsaber all her own. It’s a neat choice, in my opinion, that shows off how far she’s come while still keeping her connected to her roots. I’m less convinced on her aping Luke Skywalker’s Episode VI style, which while looking as fashionable as ever, reads a bit much like a retread to me, as well as a touch out-of-character. Luke only wore his black outfit to honor his father and make the audience nervous he might fall to the dark side, right?

Next, we have Tor Valum, who we covered potential concept art for last week. It seems we were wrong on that front, meaning that the design we previously addressed likely belongs to The Oracle, an unused character from an earlier Abrams script of Rise of Skywalker. Instead, Tor Valum looks much more like an alien from Independence Day, with a V-shaped head and tendrils in place of hair. It’s an effective look, though I do still miss the previous leak’s spider-baby.

Another image shows Kylo Ren dueling Darth Vader in a force cave. This is a relatively recent leak, not mentioned in the original Reddit post about Trevorrow’s script. Still, Kylo’s arc in what we know of Duel of the Fates so far does involve him dropping his worship for Vader shortly after visiting his castle on Mustafar, so it’s likely the duel takes place sometime around then. Vader has, after all, previously had force visions in a Sith Cave below his castle in the recent canon Marvel comics, so it’s not a big leap that Kylo could experience the same.

Towards the end of Duel of the Fates, other stormtroopers like Poe would have defected from The First Order, helping the Resistance take Coruscant from the regime. In one shot, we see their stolen walkers painted in Resistance colors and standing against oncoming loyalist walkers while citizens cheer.

Finally, let’s close on the climactic duel the script is named for. Another piece of concept art details Rey facing down Kylo Ren in a final fight on the planet Mortis, known for once housing what were essentially Force Gods in the Clone Wars cartoon. In Trevorrow’s script, Kylo is never redeemed, and though others try to turn him from the dark, he ultimately doubles-down on his fall.

There’s more to see in the album than what we’ve mentioned here, which we highly recommend checking out on your own. Regardless of how you feel about the leaked script, the artwork is beautifully detailed, and offers other stunning imagery such as a Captain Phasma lookalike executing a Resistance pilot in front of a crowd using a light-guillotine, or Hux using a lightsaber to commit seppuku as he realizes the First Order has lost for good. But for those who do like the leaked script, like myself, it also offers a pretty easy-to-follow and surprisingly thorough idea of what the final movie might have looked like, making it a pretty great place for Rise of Skywalker haters to start forming their own headcanons.
