‘Mortal Kombat 11’ Kharacter Guide: The Joker

There have been eleven main Mortal Kombat games. Can you believe it? The 90s were that long ago. Since then the fighting game has become a gory institution as colorful ninjas and sorcerers and special forces agents collide to rip each others’ guts out in wacky martial arts tournaments.

But in the past decade Mortal Kombat has gone from just a recognizable violent fighting game to a really good recognizable violent fighting game. And the recently released Mortal Kombat 11 brings the reboot trilogy home with a story mode stretching across all of history and new ways for customizing characters to your liking, with different skills and gear to make the accessible mechanics even more varied and deep.

Expensive cutscenes and ancillary (arguably exploitative) side content aren’t worth anything though if your fighting game doesn’t have a solid roster. Fortunately, Mortal Kombat 11 gives you a diverse cast of kombatants on which to unleash your bloodlust. And we’re taking a look at every single one of them. Today’s fighter: The Joker.

Who Are They?

The Joker is the star of the recent Academy Award-nominated film about the ways in which an uncaring society can push those on the fringes into becoming murderous clowns. You may also remember him as the famous DC Comics Batman villain.

Kombat Khronology

Ever since the inexplicable Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, these two franchises have been joined at the hip. Warner Bros. buying the developers certainly helped. Not only has the Joker canonically fought characters like Scorpion and Sub-Zero, but he’s also played a role in the NetherRealm’s DC Comics fighting series Injustice. In Mortal Kombat 11, the clown who loves crime has a Deadpool-esque self-awareness of this insanity.

Koolest Kustomizations

While it seems there’s unfortunately no Joaquin Phoenix skin, Joker’s look here is appreciably dapper, a big improvement from his teaser character model’s generic face. You can dress him up with all sorts of dazzling colorful suits, foppish hats, and even an eight ball in the eye. Other characters have gotten DC-inspired skins as well. Meanwhile, his moveset finally allows him to take his various violent gadgets to their M-rated conclusion at last. Beat enemies with a crowbar. Shoot them with a pistol hidden in a Batman puppet. Release a hostage who explodes into a bloody heap. Pour gasoline on the ground and light a match. We. Live. In. A. Society.

How Gross Is The Fatality?

The inside jokes continue as Joker gives you a birthday cake for a “Friendship” finishing move. The true fatality reveals itself soon enough when you get blown up and shot into bits. His Fatal Blow shows you how you got your own mouth scars. We’ve come a long way from the days when a simple “Bang” gun finisher move was deemed too controversial.

Mortal Kombat 11 is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
