A new Pinterest feature allows users to virtually try on makeup—starting with lipstick—before committing to any product.
Try On, powered by Lens, went live Tuesday in the mobile app, allowing pinners to, as the name suggests, try on different shades, save for later shopping, or buy direct from the retailer.
Using the most up-to-date application, open the Pinterest camera in search and click “Try on,” then swipe up to shop brands like Estée Lauder, Sephora, bareMinerals, Neutrogena, NYX, YSL Beauté, Lancôme, and Urban Decay.
The button also appears on select products, as well as in search with related terms like “matte lipstick” or “red lips.”
“As we focus on building inclusive products, we’ve integrated Try On with our skin tone range feature,” a company blog said. “So pinners can see similar lip shades on skin tones that match their own.”
Last week, Pinterest began rolling out a new search feature that helps narrow beauty results based on complexion. Each palette represents a range of skin tones (including pale, dark, and olive), with more to come.
Working together, skin tone ranges and Try On promise real-life results—no skin-smoothing or image-altering effects needed.
“We believe in celebrating you,” Pinterest said. “And so our AR won’t be augmenting your reality, but rather helping you to make happy and real purchases for your life.”
As you try new lip shades, snap photos of yourself to pin and shop later. Also, browse “more like this” to see pins with related looks: See someone wearing a color you like? Test a similar shade using Try On.
“We heard from pinners who wanted a way to try on new looks for happier purchases they won’t want to return while mobile shopping,” according to the blog. “They also wanted ways to explore looks without the anxiety that may come with trying something new at a store or buying a new product online they haven’t tried.”
Try On for lipstick is currently available only in the US on iOS and Android; it will roll out globally “in the future.”
YouTube last year introduced AR Beauty Try-On, a new interactive feature that lets viewers virtually test drive makeup while following along with content creators to get tips and product reviews.
While a video plays at the top of the screen, users can stream their own face below; simply tap the screen to virtually apply a palette of colors to your lips, cheeks, eyes, etc.
Find the perfect pink stain? Click the “shop” button to make your purchase.
The feature—available through Google’s in-house branded content program FameBit—launched first with M·A·C Cosmetics.
Augmented reality and makeup go way back: The technology has long been used to create social media makeup filters and promote e-commerce; Sephora, Ulta, L’Oréal, and even Target have all employed the tactic before.
