‘Doctor Who’ Showrunner: Jo Martin’s Time Lord ‘Not a Trick’

Now that we’ve all had a moment to let Sunday’s Doctor Who twists and turns sink in, let’s discuss THAT revelation.

Ruth Clayton went from Gloucester tour guide to the Impossible Doctor in less than 50 minutes, sending shockwaves through the Whoniverse.

But you can cast your fan theories aside: Showrunner Chris Chibnall this week confirmed that Jo Martin—the first black actor to take on the iconic role—is for real.

“The important thing to say is—she is definitely the Doctor,” he told British tabloid paper The Daily Mirror. “There’s not a sort of parallel universe going on, there’s no tricks.

“Jo Martin is the Doctor,” Chibnall continued. “That’s why we gave her credit at the end, which all new Doctors have the first time you see them.”

The late John Hurt got the same treatment when his War Doctor was introduced in 2013.

It’s still unclear where Martin’s version, known by her human name Ruth Clayton, fits into the titular Time Lord’s history.

Rumor has it she sits somewhere between First Doctor William Hartnell (alleged inventor of the police box TARDIS) and Second Doctor Patrick Troughton (first to employ a sonic screwdriver).

Guess all you want: Chibnall isn’t telling.

Like many hopefuls before her, when Martin was invited to audition, she wasn’t told what the role was for.

“We called her in and she read for it—with secret pages that didn’t mention that it was the Doctor,” Chibnall recalled. “But she’s a massive fan of the show and I think she guessed.”

Also massive fans: Martin’s family.

“She kept that secret brilliantly for so long—nobody knew,” the writer and producer said. “We filmed it in the middle of last year.”

Martin can apparently thank director Nida Manzoor for the new job: It was her idea to cast the prolific British actor in the unexpected role,” Chibnall admitted.

“She [Martin] was the best person for the job; it was a great suggestion,” he told the Mirror. “She’s got a brilliant combination of humor and warmth and wit and softness and steel. She’s a really exciting Doctor.”

Audiences will find out more about the new character, who arrived in her own 1970s-esque spacecraft, over time. (An exact timeline remains unknown.)

“There will be answers to some of these mysteries this series. But as ever with Doctor Who, answers often reveal new questions,” Chibnall teased, adding that “We’re telling an ongoing story … but I’m very aware of the history and very aware of continuity.”

Speaking of history: CAPTAIN JACK IS BACK!

Doctor Who

John Barrowman returns as Captain Jack Harkness (via BBC)

John Barrowman’s surprise cameo on Sunday gave me all the feels (despite his limited screen time and *groan* Cyberman prophecy).

The ageless actor—who first met the Doctor in their ninth incarnation, launched a spin-off show, and practically begged to rejoin Team TARDIS—was an incredibly welcome revelation.

“It’s absolutely amazing to be back on Doctor Who because I always said I would do it at the drop of a hat if I was ever asked,” Barrowman said in a BBC interview. “I was asked. Here I am.”

Like Martin, he had to keep the big reveal a secret, telling only his husband, parents, sister, former boss Russell T. Davies, and—duh—Tenth Doctor David Tennant.

“I think Jodie has created an entire new persona for the Doctor,” he added. “Fans always wanted to see how Jack would react whenever he gets to meet [the Thirteenth Doctor]. I didn’t really get to meet her here. So we’ll just have to—who knows—wait and see.”

The Jack Harkness love fest will have to wait, though.

“You won’t see him again this series, I can categorically tell you that,” Chris “Buzzkill” Chibnall said.

“But who knows when he might pop up again? We love Captain Jack, we love John Barrowman,” he continued. “I hope that won’t be his last appearance.”

So do we, Chris. So do we.

Doctor Who airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on BBC America.
