Mortal Kombat never really went away, but it also feels like it’s super back. The recent trilogy of truly excellent core fighting games (capped off by last year’s GOTY contender Mortal Kombat 11) has propelled the franchise back to the heights of its 90s debut. And if you’ll remember, Mortal Kombat mania was about more than just arcade games. The mythology branched out into other medium as well, like live-action movies and animated cartoons.
That’s where we find ourselves again. A new live-action Mortal Kombat movie is in production as we speak. But in the meantime check out this trailer for the upcoming animated movie Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge.
Like Mortal Kombat 9, or that Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series from a few years ago, Scorpion’s Revenge seems to be a retelling of the events of the original Mortal Kombat tournament with a focus on everyone’s favorite yellow Hell ninja. Seeing as Quan-Chi appears, later plot elements aren’t off the table. But it appears the big bad is still Shang Tsung and not his Outworld master Shao Kahn. Joel McHale plays Johnny Cage and that’s pretty great.
A big reason for Mortal Kombat’s turnaround was getting access to Warner Bros. resources. After all, the developers at NetherRealm now make the DC Comics fighting game Injustice in between Mortal Kombat releases. Scorpion’s Revenge reminds of us similar direct-to-video animated movies featuring Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. Some of the character designs, like Goro, even feel a bit Hellboy-inspired. And although we don’t see it in this trailer, the R-rating suggests the final film will have all the blood and brutality we expect from the franchise. We’ll see soon though when Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge releases this spring.
