Is Sonic the Hedgehog Black? No, he’s blue. And him and Shadow are both animals. But in an effort to make their mascot the cool 90s alternative to traditional Mario, Sega definitely wasn’t afraid to dip into Black culture when promoting Sonic. From Jaleel White voicing him in the cartoon to Michael Jackson secretly composing Sonic 3 music on Genesis, the clues were all there.
And now the tradition continues with the (slightly less terrifying-looking) live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie coming in a few weeks, featuring the voice of white Ben Schwartz. The first trailer infamously used Coolio’s “Gangster’s Paradise.” But the film now has its own original rap anthem. Take a listen to “Speed Me Up.”
“Speed Me Up” is a collaboration between Wiz Khalifa, Ty Dolla $ign, Lil Yachty & Sueco the Child. Apparently Wiz and Ty just love making theme songs for CGI recreations of sassy talking animal heroes because they also worked together on that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles rap “Shell Shocked” for the 2014 movie. I’m not complaining. More movies need theme songs and hip-hop is the music of our era.
I’m not going to go full-on rap critic here, but while I do appreciate the copious use of Sonic sound effects and 16-bit music video segments, the low-key mumblecore style of Lil Yachty, no matter how fast he raps, doesn’t feel like it has enough energy for a Sonic theme? Those Tails and Knuckles shout outs are pretty great though. And anything is better than Crush 40 buttrock, sorry!
Sonic the Hedgehog races into theaters this Valentine’s Day. Really.
